Gary Taxali – I Love You, OK?

Acclaimed artist and illustrator Gary Taxali has his book launch party and signing at the AGO today from 6-9pm and you should go. You may know his work from covers of magazines like Newsweek and The New York Times. He has been featured in the Andy Warhol Museum, and he recently collaborated with Lady Gaga on the Made In Polaroid Exhibit.

As a huge Warhol fan, Taxali’s work immediately appealed to me with its repeated use of illustration and references to 1930s style packaging, typography and advertising. It feels vintage in the most authentic way possible, taking the best of pop art and elevating it to a higher level.

I received a copy of the monograph I Love You, OK? and fell in love with the images and the way he was able to elegantly tell a story of┬álife’s┬áconstant contradictions through art, by recreating familiar images in a unique and interesting way. His is the kind of art I would strive to make if I had continued on the visual arts path after high school. I love this style and hope to one day own a print of his work.

For those in Los Angeles, he will also be signing at La Luz de Jesus Gallery on Saturday October 8 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
