TGIF: Marineland, Olympics and TIFF

the Bible has many definitions of marriage

Whoa, alright, this TGIF is gonna ¬†be epic as it’s been a few weeks since the last one because of the updating to the new design. Prepare yourselves, there’s a ton of good stuff here. Oh and my Friday got off to an awesome start as I got tickets to see Jack White! Hope you all get to see him on this tour.

  • Bruce Springsteen at Sixty-Two¬†I’m seeing him a week from today! It’ll be my third Bruce experience, and I’ve been waiting for this moment since April, so it can’t come soon enough. There’s nothing like him live. His epic three + hour concerts are the stuff of legends for a reason. This will be the first time I’m going with my Dad, who is the reason I know of/grew up with/love Bruce, so that makes it even better.
  • 36 Hours in Toronto¬†Lately, New York City publications have been talking a lot about how great Toronto is. I love it when my favorite American city praises my favorite Canadian city.
  • Cat Power‚Äôs 10 Best Songs¬†I’d switch out “Headlights” and “Cross Bones Style,” but other than that it’s the exact list I would make.
  • Premature Evaluation:Cat Power-Sun¬†This review has me so, SO excited for her. All three times I’ve seen her live, she has been excellent. I never got to experience her¬†train-wreck¬†days, so it’s not a shock to me that she has shifted far away from the “Nude As The News” Chan and wrote a truly happy album. “The centerpiece of the album, and its greatest song by a huge margin, is ‚ÄúNothin But Time,‚ÄĚ an absolute monolith of an 11-minute song that Marshall wrote for Ribisi‚Äôs teenage daughter. Marshall sings breathy, heartfelt big-sister advice: ‚ÄúNever give away your body, never give away your friends, never give away what you always wanted, never ever give in.‚ÄĚ Having to wait to hear this song is driving me crazy. I want it now.
  • ¬†Six Best Careers for Hipsters¬†This might be the worst article I’ve ever read in my life. Paralegal? That barista isn’t on there proves a content bot wrote this piece.
  • 17-Year-Old Sexual Assault Survivor Faces Court for Tweeting the Names of her Attackers¬†Good for her for not letting them get away with what they did without being publicly humiliated after they publicly humiliated her in such a horrible way. She never did have to go to court, thankfully. No one should be silenced from naming and shaming their attackers, particularly when it comes to sexual assault – those people need to be exposed, age is no excuse.
  • Unbaby.me: a chrome extension that replaces baby pictures in your newsfeed with awesome stuff¬†Although I do love the photos of my cousin that come up in my feed – because he is literally the cutest baby I’ve ever seen in my life and I wish I could hang out with him every day – I have no interest in seeing 345345 photos of my old grade school friends who I haven’t seen or spoken to in many years’ kids, yet that’s 70 percent of my news feed photos. Oh, your kid just learned to pick it’s nose? How cute/hilarious. Let me see 800 photos of that from every angle you can manage. No thanks. This is a nice solution.
  • Brent Grulke, creative director at SXSW, dies¬†Shitty news.
  • 10 places Toronto writers go to get inspired¬†Some of my favorite spots. Trinity Bellwoods, while it is a place I associate with being flashed by a creepy creepy guy many years ago, remains my favorite place for inspiration.
  • Toronto Underground Cinema to close in September¬†NOO. A short, sweet run. I will miss this place. It’s where I finally saw There Will Be Blood, which I then became obsessed with to what my friends considered a creepy degree. I still get a little excited anytime I think of the milkshake scene. Best¬†villain¬†of all time, by a million miles.
  • Marineland animals suffering, former staffers say¬†I loved Marineland as a kid – it was the one amusement parky kind of place close enough to where I grew up that I actually got to go (my parents don’t like to go farther than 30 minutes outside my hometown, still, to this day).¬†¬†But, this is just sad and depressing. I do think it is a¬†privilege¬†and an incredible learning experience to get to see¬†animals¬†you would otherwise never see so close up, but they need to be treated with the best care, particularly because they are giving us that¬†privilege.¬†
  • Aesop to the Right: Why I Believe Bristol Palin¬†This has to be the best article I’ve ever seen on the debate between Christians and the LGBT community on the fight for marriage equality (it’s also where I found the graphic I used in this post). “There‚Äôs a vast difference between being told you‚Äôre acting hateful and being told God hates you.” Amen to that.
  • Finally, POP Montreal is just a month away! Here’s their video preview:
