Bahamas – Cortez The Killer

The JUNO Concert series this year wasn’t half bad. I attended the one held at the Horseshoe with The Beauties and a ton of other similarly amazing bands (Arkells, members from Broken Social Scene, Tragically Hip, The Order of Good Cheer, etc) and it was awesome.

But the best and most memorable part of the night was definitely Bahamas performing this incredible Neil Young cover (the legend is about to release his first album with Crazy Horse in nine years, so it’s especially timely). I think everyone in the room had chills just from how beautiful it sounded. I am so happy someone was filming this – though I don’t think it truly captures the magic that happened that night – you really did need to be there. Even the Arkells performing a Tragically Hip song with Gord Sinclair didn’t compare to this.

Juno Noms and My Predictions

Juno nominations were announced today. I have been in massive pain since one of my wisdom tooth sockets got infected Saturday night, so between sleeping, praying someone will cut half my face off, and popping antibiotics and useless morphine pills like candy, I’ve been making my predictions. Keep in mind it’s just who I think SHOULD win, not who I think WILL win.

Categories for genres I do not listen to do not have predictions.

JUNO FAN CHOICE AWARD
Arcade Fire Sonovox*F>A>B
Avril Lavigne RCA*Sony
City and Colour
Deadmau5
Drake Cash Money*Universal
Ginette Reno Melon Miel*Sélect
Hedley Universal
Justin Bieber Def Jam*Universal
Michael Bublé Reprise*Warner
Nickelback Universal

Arcade Fire is the only good option here (City and Colour is a respectable choice as well), but they will probably lose to Bieber.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
City and Colour Dine Alone*Universal
Fragile Bird
Hedley Universal
Invincible
Johnny Reid Johnny Mac*EMI
Let’s Go Higher
Nickelback Universal
When We Stand Together
The Sheepdogs Warner
I Don’t Know

I think The Sheepdogs are great. Easily the best choice in this mostly shit category. “I Don’t Know” is an awesome tune, the song that made me interested in them in the first place. To say it’s “too soon” for them to win a Juno when a piece of stale dog shit like Hedley gets nominations, is a ridiculous statement.

INTERNATIONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY HMV CANADA)
Adele XL/Beggers Group*Sélect
21
Coldplay EMI
Mylo Xyloto
Lady Gaga Interscope*Universal
Born This Way
LMFAO Interscope*Universal
Sorry For Party Rocking
Rihanna Island Def Jam*Universal
Loud

Adele, obviously. LMFAO is America’s Nickelback if you ask me, so of course the Junos would nominate them. Gross.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY MUSIC CANADA)
Avril Lavigne RCA*Sony
Goodbye Lullabye
Drake Cash Money*Universal
Take Care
Justin Bieber Island Def Jam*Universal
Under the Mistletoe
Michael Bublé Reprise*Warner
Christmas
Nickelback Universal
Here And Now

This category is too awful for me to even make a prediction. Whoever wins, I will be ashamed.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
City and Colour Dine Alone*Universal
Deadmau5 Ultra*EMI
Drake Cash Money*Universal
Feist Arts&Crafts*EMI
Michael Bublé Reprise*Warner

Feist, of course.

GROUP OF THE YEAR
Arkells Arkells Music*Universal
Down With Webster Universal
Hedley Universal
Nickelback Universal
Sam Roberts Band Universal

Arkells! Much deserved nomination. If Sam takes it, that’s also cool. But those other three “bands” really need to never make music ever again.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
Alyssa Reid Wax*Warner
Dan Mangan Arts&Crafts*EMI
Diamond Rings Secret City*EMI
JRDN Kuya*Fontana North
Lindi Ortega Last Gang*Universal

Go Dan! Rooting for you, only person in the world who can cover Elliott Smith songs without ruining them.

NEW GROUP OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
Braids Flemish Eye*Outside
Hey Rosetta! Sonic*Warner
Mother Mother Last Gang*Universal
The Rural Alberta Advantage Paper Bag*Fontana North
The Sheepdogs Warner

It’s always funny to see bands that have existed for so many years get new group nominations, but at least this category is stacked with good music. Hey Rosetta is the best of the five, so they should take it, but I’ll be happy for whoever wins.

SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY SIRIUSXM CANADA)
Dallas Green Dine Alone*Universal | Publisher: Cobalt
“Fragile Bird”, “We Found Each Other”, “Weightless” LITTLE HELL – City and Colour
Dan Mangan Arts&Crafts*EMI | Publisher: Dan Mangan Music

Jim Cuddy Warner | Publisher: Buried Crow Music
“Everyone Watched The Wedding”, “Skyscraper Soul”, “Watch Yourself Go Down” SKYSCRAPER SOUL – Jim Cuddy
Ron Sexsmith Warner | Publisher: Ronboy Rhymes/Sony ATV Music Publishing (SOCAN)
“Get In Line”, “Believe It When I See It”, “Middle of Love” LONG PLAYER LATE BLOOMER – Ron Sexsmith

Another stacked category, all deserving nominees, but I think this is gonna be a(nother) Feist year.

Native Speaker
Dan Mangan Arts & Crafts*EMI
Oh Fortune
Destroyer Merge*F>A>B
Kaputt
Fucked Up Matador*Sélect
David Comes To Life
Timber Timbre Arts&Crafts*EMI
Creep On Creepin’ On

If I liked metal/music that involves screaming, I’d obviously choose Fucked Up’s David Comes To Life, and as much as I know I should like it and realize what an awesome album this was in terms of being a boundary blurring rock opera, it’s not something I can really listen to. Creep On Creepin’ On easily made my Top 10 of 2011, so I’m really hoping they take this one.

POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Avril Lavigne RCA*Sony
Goodbye Lullaby
Down With Webster Universal
Time To Win Vol. II
Hedley Universal
Storms
Lights Lights Music*Universal
Siberia
Marianas Trench 604*Universal
Ever After

Lights! She’s great. Everyone else in this catagory is terrible, and what they make is not even ‘pop music’.

ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY RECORDING ARTISTS’ COLLECTING SOCIETY – A DIVISION OF ACTRA)
Arkells Arkells Music*Universal
Michigan Left
Matthew Good Universal
Lights of Endangered Species
Sam Roberts Band Universal
Collider
Sloan Outside
The Double Cross
The Sheepdogs
Learn & Burn

Another great selection of nominees, and I think Arkells actually deserve this more than Sloan, but I’d really like to see Sloan get up there and be awarded for what was their best album since the 90s. Learn & Burn was released in 2010 so I’m not sure how that really counts? I guess re-releases are viable.

This was tough because 1) the best video of the year is hands down The Darcys video for “Don’t Bleed Me” and it wasn’t even nominated, and 2) I adore Hollerado’s video for “Good Day at the Races”, but in the end I had to go with the one that had a genuine story behind it that I could relate to. I absolutely loved RAA’s video for “Stamp”

Juno 2011 Nominees And Predictions

The Juno’s are coming back to Toronto on March 27th and I am happy to see a few of my favorite Canadian artists landed a bunch of nominations. Here is the list of noms and who I think will take home the prize (excluding categories I am not familiar with enough to make any kind of prediction).

JUNO FAN CHOICE AWARD (PRESENTED BY LIVE NATION)
Drake Cash Money*Universal
Hedley Universal
Johnny Reid Johnny Mac*EMI
Justin Bieber Island Def Jam*Universal
Michael Bublé WEA*Warner

Easy win. He has tween girls all over the world who are obsessed with him like dogs in heat that will be voting for him all day, every day. Guaranteed.

SINGLE OF THE YEAR
Oh Canada Classified HalfLife*Sony
Find Your Love Drake Cash Money*Universal
Perfect Hedley Universal
Hallelujah Vancouver Winter 2010 kd lang Nonesuch*Warner
Wavin’ Flag Young Artists for Haiti Universal

Considering what an anthem this became around the world after the Haiti tragedy last year, I’d be confused if any of the others take it home. People do love Canadian pride though, so Classified or KD Lang could steal it with their Vancouver Olympics songs.

INTERNATIONAL ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Recovery Eminem Interscope*Universal
Teenage Dream Katy Perry Capitol*EMI
Animal Ke$ha RCA*Sony
Need You Now Lady Antebellum Capitol Nashville*EMI
Speak Now Taylor Swift Big Machine/Open Road*Universal

I could be underestimating the popularity of Taylor Swift and Eminem here in Canada, but of these choices I think Katy Perry is the most deserving. Fun pop singles, good simple dance music. Not at all the best International Album of the Year if you ask me, but of these five, definitely.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY CANADIAN RECORDING INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION)
The Suburbs Arcade Fire Sonovox*F.A.B.

Thank Me Later Drake Cash Money*Universal
The Show Must Go Hedley Universal
A Place Called Love Johnny Reid Johnny Mac*EMI
My World 2.0 Justin Bieber Island Def Jam*Universal

This is more who I think deserves to win than who I think actually will win. I have this fear that the Biebs will take home everything he is nominated for, but if he gets Album of the Year over Arcade Fire I don’t think the music industry will care about the Juno’s ever again. Drake however could/will most likely take this home.

ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Drake Cash Money*Universal
Johnny Reid Johnny Mac*EMI
Justin Bieber Island Def Jam*Universal
Neil Young Reprise*Warner
Sarah McLachlan Nettwerk*Sony

The man is a legend. He will be in attendance receiving the Humanitarian Award this year, so my money is on Neil all the way. I think he will win, and he is the only one from this list that deserves to win.

GROUP OF THE YEAR
Arcade Fire Sonovox*F.A.B.
Broken Social Scene Arts & Crafts*EMI
Down With Webster Universal Motown*Universal
Great Big Sea WEA*Warner
Three Days Grace Jive*Sony

I may be the ultimate Broken Social Scene fan girl, but even if I wasn’t, they should still take this home over the more internationally popular Arcade Fire. The Juno’s gave BSS their break way back in the day, they get it.

NEW ARTIST OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
Basia Bulat Secret City*EMI

Bobby Bazini Mungo Park* Sélect
Caribou Merge*F.A.B.
Hannah Georgas Hidden Pony*EMI
Meaghan Smith Sire/WEA*Warner

I know Caribou has a solid indie following so I wouldn’t be surprised if they get this one, but I have a soft spot for Basia ever since I heard her spectacular Daniel Johnston cover:

NEW GROUP OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY FACTOR AND RADIO STARMAKER FUND)
Die Mannequin WEA*Warner

Hollerado Royal Mountain*Arts & Crafts/EMI
Misteur Valaire Mr. Label*Outside/Select
My Darkest Days 604*Universal

They have a strong sound, and a rarity in an awesome female bandleader. It’s about time.

SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY SIRIUS SATELLITE RADIO)
Arcade Fire

THE SUBURBS – Arcade Fire Sonovox*F.A.B.*Arcade Fire Music

Drake
“Fireworks”- co-songwriter M. Samuels | “Over”- co-songwriters N. Shebib, M. Samuels, C. Kalla & A. Cook | “Show Me A Good Time”- co-songwriters K. West, J. Bhasker & E. Wilson

Sarah McLachlan
“Illusions of Bliss” | “Forgiveness”- co-songwriter Pierre Marchand | “Loving You Is Easy”
LAWS OF ILLUSION – Sarah McLachlan Nettwerk*Sony*Tyde Music

I’m probably being too optimistic in my hope for an Arcade Fire sweep over beloved international success stories like Drake, but this category is about songwriting which is the strength of a band like theirs.

COUNTRY ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY COUNTRY STYLE)
Love Rules Carolyn Dawn Johnson Dancing Lily/Road Angel*Universal
Trail in Life Dean Brody Open Road*Universal
Sunshine Deric Ruttan Black T*EMI
Day Job Gord Bamford Cache Ent.*Royalty
A Place Called Love Johnny Reid Johnny Mac*EMI

He’s the only country artist performing at the awards + he’s nominated in the Fan’s Choice category. No doubt he will take it.

ADULT ALTERNATIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY GALAXIE, YOUR MUSICAL UNIVERSE)
Black Dub Black Dub Jive*Sony
You I Wind Land and Sea Justin Nozuka Coalition*Warner
Steel City Trawler Luke Doucet And The White Falcon Six Shooter*Warner
Le Noise Neil Young Reprise*Warner
Oh Little Fire Sarah Harmer Cold Snap*Universal

Same deal as Artist of the Year. It’s Neil Young. He makes not so good albums like this one and they’re still much better than 95% of what’s out there.

ALTERNATIVE ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY LONG & MCQUADE)
The Suburbs Arcade Fire Sonovox*F.A.B.
Forgiveness Rock Record Broken Social Scene Arts & Crafts*EMI
Les chemins de verre Karkwa Audiogram*Select
Heartland Owen Pallett For Great Justice*Sonic Unyon
Champ Tokyo Police Club Dine Alone*Universal

This was my personal choice for Album of the Year of all the albums of last year, of course I want it to win. ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’ is easily the best album on this list, by a whole lot. Sorry Arcade Fire, Suburbs is really good but like Neon Bible, it falls short from the high standard Funeral set out.

POP ALBUM OF THE YEAR (SPONSORED BY RECORDING ARTISTS’ COLLECTING SOCIETY – A DIVISION OF ACTRA)
Better in Time Bobby Bazini Mungo Park* Select
Time to Win Vol. 1 Down With Webster Universal Motown*Universal
Can’T keEp A SecrEt Faber Drive 604*Universal
My World 2.0 Justin Bieber Island Def Jam*Universal
Laws of Illusion Sarah McLachlan Nettwerk*Sony

It’s Bieber. They already made a documentary about his life and he’s maybe 14.

ROCK ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Bears, Mayors, Scraps & Bones Cancer Bats Distort*Universal
Fino + Bleed Die Mannequin WEA*Warner
Life Turns Electric Finger Eleven Wax/Wind-Up*Warner
Population: Declining Hail the Villain WEA*Warner
Vancouver Matthew Good Universal

The respectable choice. Would be nice to see Die Mannequin take this if not Good. I wasn’t aware Finger Eleven still existed until I read this list, weird.

RAP RECORDING OF THE YEAR
Thank Me Later Drake Cash Money*Universal

Vaudeville D-Sisive URBNET* Fontana North

Sofi Needs a Ladder Deadmau5 Ultra*EMI
Fixin’ To Thrill Dragonette Universal
Table Dancer Keshia Chanté Tanjola*Univeral

As much as I love the Forced to Love video and think it’s a stronger song than Metric’s, Christopher Mills short film for Collect Call has to win this. It’s more than just a music video:

A lot of people didn’t love This Movie is Broken as much as I did, but it captured the Toronto music scene perfectly for me. My favorite  music film of 2010. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing a BSS Toronto concert with the entire collective, you need to see this movie. You can fast forward through the love story to the concert if you don’t like it.

ELECTRONIC ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Swim Caribou Merge*F.A.B.
Ivory Towers Chilly Gonzales Arts & Crafts*EMI
Crystal Castles (II) Crystal Castles Last Gang*Universal
Latin Holy Fuck Lights Music*Universal
Running High Poirier Ninja Tune*Outside

Fairly strong category, could go many ways. I’m not a huge electronic fan but Crystal Castles seem to have the same level of adoration from their fans that Beiber has from his, which is strange. Really I just want to see Alice Glass accept an award/speak. Kinda doubt they will even show up though.

That’s how I think it should go down. Who do you want to win? Who from the Canadian industry was left out?
